Our Story
Valdez Institute of Self Defense was founded by Anthony and Kevin Valdez in 2018. With over 25 years of martial arts and fitness experience between the both of them, they strive to pass down the knowledge they have gained, to others so they may achieve their martial arts and fitness goals.
Anthony Valdez began his martial arts journey in the year 1992 with his first instructor, Sifu Paul Vizzio in Fu Jow Pai (Tiger Claw) system of kung fu. He trained with Sifu Vizzio for a few years until his family moved to North Carolina where he took up Tae Kwon Do in the year 1999 with Grandmaster K.S Lee. His primary instructor was Julia Starr Lee in the Garner, North Carolina location. Anthony trained with Master Starr Lee until he received his first degree black belt in 2003. Upon his move back to New Jersey he continued his Tae Kwon Do training until he decided to explore other arts. In 2009 Anthony began his Jeet Kune Do, Kali, and Wing Chun training under Sifu Cesar Olavarria and has been his student ever since. During his martial arts journey with Sifu Olavarria he has earned the following ranks:
- Associate Instructor in Contemporary Jeet Kune Do under Sifu Cesar Olavarria
- Associate Instructor in the Filipino Martial Arts under Guro Cesar Olavarria
- Mataas Na Guro in Pekiti Tirsia Kali under Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje Jr.
- Apprentice Instructor in Yip Man’s Wing Chun under Sifu Cesar Olavarria
- Apprentice Instructor in Progressive Fighting System under Sifu Paul Vunak
Apart from training in arts such as Jeet Kune Do, Kali, Wing Chun, and Tae Kwon Do, Anthony also has explored other arts such as Muay Thai, Silat, as well as various grappling arts as Shooto and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. His goal is to pass on the knowledge he has acquired over his years of training to others so they may find the same love and passion for Martial Arts that he has.
Kevin Valdez is a highly dedicated individual with a passion for fitness and martial arts. He is a certified nutritionist with a deep knowledge of the science of nutrition and its impact on overall health and fitness. Kevin also has extensive experience in weightlifting and exercise, having worked with a variety of clients to help them reach their fitness goals through customized training programs.
In addition to his expertise in fitness and nutrition, Kevin is also a skilled martial artist, having trained in Tae Kwon Do for many years. His training has not only given him the physical skills necessary for self-defense, but also the discipline and mental fortitude to overcome challenges and achieve success in all aspects of life.
